Judge (and Duffy expert) Dr Mari Hughes-Edwards selected Jack Cooper as the third prize winner.

A private man, public spaces was inspired by Duffy’s diction, along with her common themes of suffering and queer love.

Mari commented, ‘this poem respects her connection with men, their lives and their work in its naming of masculine fragilities’, and praised its references to The Anvil and some of Duffy’s influences.

widely recognized for its iconic spire, will be throwing open its
doors this coming Holy Week to host a community exhibition
entitled Imago Dei.

Imago Dei will focus on images of God, and of
humanity, and will include poetry, music, and art.

Vicky Olliver’s ‘Spring’, and Jack Cooper’s ‘Convert’ will be part of the exhibition.

On Wednesday 17th April and Saturday 20th April, between
11am and 1pm, local poet Mary Duggan will run a workshop
called “Where word meets art”, which will provide a practical
opportunity for members of the local community to add their
own work and thoughts to the exhibition.

Local poets, including Vicky Olliver, will be reading their poetry live on Saturday from
2pm to 3pm.

Revd Mark Meatcher, minister of Christ Church, explained the
aims of the exhibition:-
“Christ Church United Reformed Church are keen to show off
their building and to encourage a greater use of it. .
We are eager to encourage people to come and share with us
when we worship week by week, and also, with the support of
the local community, provide opportunities for shared
experiences together.
This exhibition enables us to do just that, and we look forward
to welcoming people to spend some time with us during Holy
Week in whatever way they can, or wish to do so.”

“Imago Dei” will be open daily during Holy Week from 15th to
21st April (10 am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, 1pm to 4pm on
Good Friday and 10 am to 4pm on Easter Saturday).

In that spirit, they will be hosting five members of Highgate Poets on Saturday 2nd March.

If you would like to hear work from Anna Meryt, Milverton Wallace, Jack Cooper, Sal Consoli, and Michael Pierce, head to Thomas Hardy House, 39 London Road, Enfield. Performances start at 7:30pm. Admission is £3.50, or £2.50 for Concessions.

Anna Meryt has been a published poet for many years and has two poetry collections: Dolly Mix (2014) and Heart Broke (2013). She is the current facilitator of Highgate Poets. Anna co-edited the Highgate Poets’ Anthology Naming the Clouds (2017). She has published a memoir (2015) and a non-fiction book for writers (2018).

Milverton Wallace is a former journalist, editor, university lecturer, hackathon organiser, co-founder of a kids’ coding club, and poet.

Jack Cooper works in neuroscience research, using fruit flies to understand how the brain generates complex behaviours. He was shortlisted for the New Poets’ Prize (2018), and longlisted for the National Poetry Competition (2017).

Sal Consoli is a researcher of Applied Linguists at the University of Warwick. He is constantly engaged with poetry work with the Brum Stanza group, and is now using poetry as part of his research in social services.

Michael Pierce is a Director of a Housing Trust and Assistant Principal of a College of Further Education. Currently he teaches Transcendental Meditation. Michael is the author of Bland Ambition and Other Poems (David Paul Press).

Formerly known as the Resurgence Prize, The Gingko Prize is a major international award for poems embracing ecological themes.

He has won a ten-day residency at Cill Rialaig Arts Centre in western Ireland.

Ruth was away, but we were presented by Belinda Singleton in her stead, to a small but appreciative audience.
Interesting and exciting poetry from Sal Consoli, Christina Juan, Valentina Kotsuba, Anna Meryt, and Milverton Wallace. What a diverse group we are with British poets who originated from Spain, the Philippines, Russia, Wales and Jamaica! All performances were to a high standard.

On Friday 22nd June, several Highgate Poets also took part in a fantastic evening of poetry for the Enfield Literary Festival at The Dugdale Centre, Enfield, organised by Martin Russo and Katherine Gallagher.

The poem is part of the Flashbacks collection about her childhood memories, and hence features Russian cultural references. Childhood is one of the closest and dearest themes to the poet, upon which she embarked after reading Seamus Heaney.
